all my fonts in the Preferences/font&background/... are set by Edit to a cyrillic encoding - and it works fine. u could also set "use always my fonts" or whatever u like there, or force them amnualy by the "toggle document font/colors button - 3rd from the left to roght on the bottom (usualy))

other encoding change on the fly is not supporeted, as far as i know
